Background: In January 2007, Dr. Michael Haglund, Duke Neurosurgery Program Director, first visited new Mulago Hospital in Kampala. The need for more modernized equipment that Haglund saw in Uganda spurred the creation of the Duke Global Health PLUS Program (Placement of Life-changing Usable Surplus). Through Global Health PLUS, Haglund and his team collected and delivered nine tons of surplus medical equipment and donated supplies to the Mulago Hospital later that year. The 28-member team trained Mulago Hospital staff to use and maintain the new equipment. After, surgeons from both countries joined in conducting a number of brain and spinal surgeries. The hospital will soon establish a new neurosurgical training program co-directed by Dr. Haglund. |
Clinical Opportunities: The 1,500-bed hospital is the largest in the nation of 28 million and is the nation's premier referral, teaching and research hospital. Annual inpatient admissions are estimated at 120,000 and over 480,000 outpatients are treated per year. Specialist services include Surgery, Internal medicine, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology. |
Research: To date, no research efforts have been undertaken at Mulago, although there are a myriad of possibilities. |
