Background: Shyira Hospital is a mission hospital operated through the Rwandan Episcopal Anglican Church. In 2003, Drs. Caleb and Louise King responded to the call to relocate to Rwanda from South Carolina and serve the local population who had previously gone ten years without a doctor in the area. Drs. Caleb and Louise King both attended Harvard Medical School, where Caleb specialized in pediatric gastroenterology and Louise in internal medicine, although their work at Shyira demands that they expand far out from their respective specialties. The hospital is part of a complex that includes a church, two primary schools, two secondary schools and a trade school. |
Clinical Opportunities: Shyira Hospital serves a surrounding rural population of over 200,000, the vast majority of whom live in poverty. In addition to providing basic health care needs, they have an active HIV service, offering preventive services and anti retroviral treatment supplied by the Rwandan Ministry of Health and the Columbia University School of Public Health's multi-country AIDS program (MCAP). After just one year of the treatment program, Shyira Hospital already follows 550 patients in the HIV clinic, 170 of whom are on antiretroviral treatment. |
Research: To date, no research efforts have been undertaken by Duke trainees at Shyira. |
