Summary

In 2008, John Lawrence, then a Senior Partner with Asheville Cardiology Associates, contacted the Hubert-Yeargan Center expressing an interest in working in a developing country.  Dr. Lawrence’s interests in the medical education of residents and medical students, as well as his special interest in the interface of humanistic concerns, medical science and bioethics coincided nicely with a recently awarded  NHLBI funded grant to establish a Cardiovascular Center of Excellence at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya.

Dr. Lawrence’s committment to the initiative, and that of his wife Dale, has been nothing short of extraordinary.  Since the earliest years, they have spent four to eight months a year in Kenya helping to establish a clinical cardiovascular service including a robust outpatient clinic, inpatient teaching service, opening of a new 10-patient cardiac care unit and the development of a Cardiovascular Fellowship Training Curriculum at Moi University.
