Global Health Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship

Applications are accepted each fall from internal candidates only for the Global Health Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship. (See application process for details.)

Global Health Fellows from the Duke Pediatric Cardiology Program extend their training by one year, completing fellowships in both Global Health and Pediatric Cardiology in four years. Global Health Pediatric Cardiology Fellows will engage in Master of Science in Global Health (MSc-GH) coursework during PGY5 and will attend weekly continuity clinics, conferences, and all other mandatory meetings required by the Pediatric Cardiology Training Program during this period of training. Trainees will spend nine to eleven months during PGY5 engaging in clinical care and mentored research activities at a global partner site before returning to a full time clinical Pediatric Cardiology year.  Pediatric Cardiology Fellows who have successfully completed PGY1 are eligible to apply with the approval of their Program Director. In addition to a biweekly journal club, there will be ample opportunity to access special events and lectures throughout the training program.

Global Health Competencies for Pediatric Cardiology

​Health Disparities

  • Goals: Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for culturally competent care.
  • Objectives: Trainees will be asked to keep a log of instructive patient cases in which social determinants (e.g. education, access to clean water, food, security, housing, early life experiences, social trauma, and gender) have played a major role in the health of a given patient. In the final month of the program, Trainees will undergo an oral examination in which five or more of these cases are discussed.

Tropical Medicine

  • Goals: Describe the major pathological processes, their biological alterations, and how they affect specific organ systems.
  • Objectives: Trainees will receive a number of didactic sessions taught by Duke faculty on leading infectious and non-infectious chronic diseases which cause significant morbidity and mortality in resource-poor settings. Competency in these areas will be assessed by case-study based oral examinations administered in the final month of the program.

Public Health

  • Goals: Develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to practice basic principles of prevention.
  • Objectives: Trainees will receive intensive didactic training in public health through the MSc-GH program. Topics of importance include research methods, program implementation and evaluation, health policy, family planning and population programs, environmental health, and community healthcare.
