Summary

Preeti Manavalan completed the Global Health Infectious Diseases Fellowship in 2019. She completed her medical training at Howard University College of Medicine and graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. During medical school she was heavily involved in community advocacy and global health. She helped establish the first student-run free clinic at her medical school and her work in global health led to experiences in Nigeria, Haiti and Peru. She completed a Primary Care Internal Medicine residency at Yale. During residency she worked in an HIV clinic in Tugela Ferry, South Africa and provided care to HIV infected patients, managed TB and MDR TB co-infections and participated in community outreach. As Chief Resident at Yale, she initiated a curriculum for community outreach and gave a Medical Grand Rounds on the social determinants of health which focused on how physicians can make large-scale, meaningful impacts to improve outcomes. Her exposures to patient care in resource-limited settings has led her to pursue a career in global health with a focus in HIV. As a Global Health Fellow, she investigated and addressed the social determinants of health amongst vulnerable populations infected with HIV in order to reduce health care disparities. Dr. Manavalan worked under the mentorship of Melissa Watt at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi, Tanzania. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Disease and Global Medicine at the University of Florida.
