Dr. Andrew McCrary is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and a pediatric cardiologist at Duke University School of Medicine. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Emory University and completed his pediatrics residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship at Duke.

During his pediatric residency, Dr. McCrary participated in the Hubert-Yeargan Center’s global health clinical elective and spent two months at Tenwek Mission Hospital in Bomet, Kenya. He served as a general pediatrician and encountered a high burden of congenital and structural heart disease in children.

His experience at Tenwek confirmed his decision to join the Global Health Pathway in 2016 combined with pediatric cardiology fellowship. As a Global Health Fellow, Dr. McCrary explored cardiac performance in children with HIV at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya while expanding his competency in advanced cardiovascular imaging.  GE provided a portable ultrasound for use in Dr. McCrary’s research project. The work is highlighted here. The project demonstrated a high burden of early cardiac dysfunction in children and adolescents otherwise doing well on HIV treatment. The primary outcomes of this project are reported here. The is continuing to better understand the inflammatory signature of early cardiac dysfunction.

Dr. McCrary completed the Duke Global Health Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship in 2018.  Since that time, he has been an important part of the HYC, serving as an international trainee mentor and supervisor and as a partner in capacity development. He has also delivered didactic lectures as part of the Moi Cardiovascular Fellowship program.
