Background

Bugando Medical Centre is a consultant and teaching hospital for the Lake and Western zones of the United Republic of Tanzania. BMC is located in Mwanza City close to the shores of Lake Victoria. It has 900 beds and over 900 employees. BMC is a tertiary referral hospital for specialist care for six regions including Mwanza, Mara, Kagera, Shinyanga, Tabora and Kigoma. It serves a catchment area of 13 million people.

Clinical Opportunities

Duke residents have the opportunity to participate in clinical rotations at Bugando Medical Center. BMC is an excellent location for hands-on patient care. Residents will have the opportunity to improve physical exams skills and learn how to provide patient care in a resource poor setting.

Research

While Duke residents on two month clinical elective rotations typically do not engage in research efforts, Global Health Pathway graduate and Duke faculty member, Dr. Kristin Schroeder, has been conducting research at BMC for several years. Working under the Duke Global Cancer Initiative, Dr. Schroeder has established a project to improve the understanding of the pediatric oncology burden in Western Tanzania.
