Summary

Shanti Narayanasamy completed the Global Health Pathway in 2022 after having been a global health fellow in Duke’s Infectious Diseases program.  She is currently practicing as an infectious diseases physician in the Department of Medicine at the Austin Hospital, University of Melbourne, Australia.  She earned her medical degree from the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. She continued her training with a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in the United Kingdom.

As a global health infectious diseases fellow, she planned to focus her research in Vietnam on tackling a neglected HIV-associated infection – Talaromyces marneffei. However, due to the pandemic, Dr. Narayanasamy pivoted part of her research to explore race in medicine with her project “Attending to Race: Exploring how Physicians and Medical Students Operationalize Race in Medicine”. The ultimate aims of the study are to develop education interventions on race and medicine, as well as provide feedback to participating departments at Duke to support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work.
