Meet Our Residents & Fellows

A Program in Partnership With Duke Global Health Institute

Thomas Holland, MD, MSc-GH

GHP Graduate

Infectious Diseases

Department of Medicine

Summary

Dr. Thomas Holland completed the Global Health Fellowship Pathway in 2011 and is currently Assistant Professor of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. He concurrently completed a Fogarty International Clinical Research Fellowship in Eldoret, Kenya where he investigated the prevalence of rheumatic heart disease. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University in Evolutionary Biology and his MD from Wake Forest University before completing Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship training at Duke. His earliest interest in global health was born out of a year spent teaching in a secondary school in Lilongwe, Malawi.

During his internal medicine residency Dr. Holland was selected to spend several months working with a primarily Aboriginal population in the Australian Outback on a Global Health Rotation. This experience further crystallized his commitment to a career spent advancing the care of underserved populations. He subsequently embarked upon Infectious Disease specialty training and simultaneously joined the Global Health Fellowship at Duke. The Global Health Pathway has equiped Dr. Holland as an infectious disease clinician as well as providing multidisciplinary training, via the Master of Science in Global Health, in biostatistics, economics, ethics, research methods, and politics of global health.

Dr. Holland seeks to apply this multidisciplinary training to a problem of fundamental importance in the developing world. In rheumatic heart disease in Kenya, there is an intersection of the clinical worlds of acute infectious disease and chronic cardiovascular disease, as well as the challenge of improving upon currently inadequate epidemiologic data.
