Summary

Dr. John A. Crump, a specialist on infectious diseases and microbiology, is the former and founding site director for Duke’s longest-running partnership at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania. He has been engaged with the Hubert-Yeargan Center (HYC) since 2002, serving as a research mentor for Global Health Pathway trainees engaged in work at KCMC.

After graduation in Medicine from the University of Otago, Dr. Crump undertook postgraduate education and training in New Zealand, United Kingdom, South Africa, London, Australia, and the United States. In addition to internal medicine and pathology, and has trained in field epidemiology with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Crump continues to provide mentorship to Duke and international medical students, residents, and fellows linked to his collaborative research on infectious diseases in northern Tanzania. His research interest is on non-malaria febrile illness, including invasive salmonelloses and zoonoses.

Crump was awarded the 2005 US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention James H. Steele Veterinary Public Health Award for outstanding contributions in the field of veterinary public health or One Health, and the 2012 American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Bailey K. Ashford Medal for distinguished work in tropical medicine.
